Where to Watch the Sunset in Formentera: 5 Best Spots

Formentera faces west, and that single fact turns almost every evening into an event. As the light softens, locals and visitors drift towards the coast to watch the sun drop into the sea. Here are five of the best places to catch it — all within easy reach of Casa Trini. Tap any place name to open it in Google Maps.

1. Cala Saona — the closest sunset beach

The nearest sunset spot to the house, Cala Saona is a sheltered cove of pale sand framed by red cliffs and pines. The bay opens to the west, so the sun sets straight down the middle of it. Arrive early, order a drink at one of the two beach restaurants, and settle in. It’s a 10-minute drive from Casa Trini.

2. Cap de Barbaria lighthouse

At the island’s southern tip, the road runs out at the Faro de Cap de Barbaria, a lone white lighthouse on a wild, treeless headland. It’s the most cinematic sunset on Formentera — bring shoes for the rocky path and stay for the afterglow. Go 45 minutes before sunset to find a spot.

3. Sunset bars near Sant Ferran

For sunset with a soundtrack, the bars along the western shore pour cocktails as the sky turns. The famous Blue Bar and Piratabus are island institutions — relaxed, barefoot, and unhurried.

4. Es Cavall d’en Borràs

A quieter choice: the pine-backed beach of Es Cavall d’en Borràs, near the port, looks across the water to Ibiza. The silhouette of Es Vedrà in the distance makes for a memorable photo.

5. Your own terrace

You don’t always need to leave. Casa Trini’s covered terraces and garden catch the golden hour beautifully — pour a glass of local wine, and let the light do the rest.

A few tips

  • Check the time. In midsummer the sun sets around 21:15; in spring and autumn closer to 20:00. Arrive 30–45 minutes early.
  • Bring a layer. The breeze picks up as the sun goes down.
  • Stay for the afterglow. The best colours often come 10–15 minutes after the sun has gone.

Wherever you choose, Formentera’s sunsets have a way of slowing everything down — which is rather the point of the island.
