How to Get to Formentera: Flights, Ferries & Getting Around

Formentera is the smallest of Spain’s inhabited Balearic Islands, and reaching it is part of the adventure. Here is everything you need to know to travel there smoothly and move around once you arrive.

First Stop: Ibiza Airport

Formentera has no airport of its own, so every journey begins in the air above its larger neighbour. You fly into Ibiza Airport (IBZ), which is served by direct flights from across Spain and much of Europe, especially in the summer season. From there, the only way onward is by sea, so plan for a two-leg trip: plane, then boat.

From the Airport to the Ferry Port

Once you land, you need to reach Ibiza town (Eivissa), where the ferries to Formentera depart. The quickest option is a taxi, which takes roughly 20 minutes to the port. Alternatively, the airport bus (línea 10 / airbus) connects the terminal with the town centre; from the stop it is a short walk to the ferry terminal. Both are reliable, though taxis are far easier if you are travelling with luggage.

Crossing to La Savina

The ferry from Ibiza town port to La Savina, Formentera’s only port, takes about 30 minutes on a fast ferry. The principal operators are Baleària, Trasmapi and Aquabus, and in summer their boats run frequently throughout the day, tapering off in the low season. It is wise to book ahead during peak July and August, when crossings fill quickly. Always check current schedules before you travel, as timetables change with the seasons.

Getting Around Formentera

The island measures only about 19 kilometres from end to end, so getting around is refreshingly simple. Rental agencies cluster right at La Savina port, offering bicycles, e-bikes, scooters and small cars. For a laid-back holiday, a bicycle or e-bike is perfect, and Formentera’s network of marked “green routes” (rutes verdes) makes cycling and walking through pine woods and salt flats a genuine pleasure.

That said, a scooter or a small car gives you the freedom to reach quieter beaches and to come and go easily from your accommodation. If you plan to explore the length of the island, motorised transport saves time and effort under the summer sun.

Practical Tips

  • Book both your ferry and your vehicle rental early if you are travelling in July or August; demand is high and availability is limited.
  • If you are only visiting for the day, note the time of the last ferry back to Ibiza so you are not stranded.
  • Pack light. Smaller bags are far easier to handle across a plane, a bus or taxi, and a boat.
  • Weigh bringing your own car on the ferry against renting one on the island; for short stays, renting at La Savina is usually simpler.

Arriving at Casa Trini

Once you reach Formentera, home is close at hand. Casa Trini is a rustic house that sleeps 1 to 8, set just 500 metres from the sea and around 1.5 kilometres from La Savina port, near the village of Sant Francesc. After a plane, a ferry and a short hop by car or scooter, you will find yourself perfectly placed to slip into the gentle rhythm of island life.
