How Long Is the Season in Formentera? May to October

Formentera’s season is longer than many people expect. The island wakes up in May and stays warm and swimmable right through October — so you don’t have to squeeze your trip into the crowded heart of summer to enjoy the beach.

May — the season opens

May is when Formentera comes back to life. Days average a pleasant 23 °C with around nine hours of sunshine, wildflowers still colour the fields, and the beaches are gloriously quiet. The sea is fresh — about 18 °C — so swims are bracing rather than balmy, but the light, the calm and the space more than make up for it. Ferries, beach bars and restaurants are reopening for the season.

June to August — high summer

From late June the island hits full stride. Temperatures sit between 27 and 32 °C, the nights are warm, and the sea climbs to its warmest — around 26 °C in August. This is the liveliest, busiest time: the famous turquoise shallows of Ses Illetes and the long sands of Platja de Migjorn fill up, and it pays to book ferries, cars and tables ahead.

September — the local favourite

Many regulars will tell you September is the sweet spot. Daytime temperatures still hover around 27 °C, the sea is at its warmest after a whole summer of heating, and the July–August crowds have thinned. Long, calm swims and easy dinners without a reservation — this is the island at its most relaxed.

October — still beach weather

Here’s the part visitors underestimate: October is still a beach month. Early in the month days reach about 24 °C, and because the sea holds the summer’s stored heat, the water stays a comfortable 22–25 °C — warm enough for easy swimming into mid-October. The light turns golden, the coves at Cala Saona empty out, and the island feels like it belongs to you. Some seasonal bars and shops wind down towards the end of the month, so a few things close — but the beach doesn’t.

When we’d come

  • For warm water and calm: June, September and early October.
  • For peak buzz and the warmest nights: July–August (book everything early).
  • For quiet and wildflowers: May.
  • Whenever you come, pack a light layer for the evenings — the sea breeze cools things down after sunset.

Casa Trini is open right across the season, just 500 m from the sea and sleeping 1 to 8 — so you can choose the month that suits you and still walk to the water.
