Flower Power Formentera: the grooviest night of the summer

Once a year, Formentera switches on its time machine. The streets of Es Pujols fill with fringes, flowers, round sunglasses and sixties music, as the island throws a big-hearted party for the heritage that made it famous: the hippie spirit. This is Flower Power — the most anticipated (and most photogenic) night of the Formentera summer.
What is Flower Power Formentera?
Flower Power is a big open-air street party held every summer in Es Pujols, usually in mid-July around the Mare de Déu del Carme festivities. The Plaça d’Europa and the seafront promenade are dressed in psychedelic decorations, lights and flowers, while DJs and live acts run through the best of the sixties, seventies and eighties.
Best of all, it is free and open to everyone. Families, kids, grandparents and night owls dance together in the street, and nearly everybody comes in costume. Early evening is family time; as the night goes on, the square becomes one giant dance floor by the sea.
The island’s hippie roots
The party is no theme-park invention — it is living memory. In the late 1960s, Formentera welcomed a community of hippies from Germany, France and the United States, drawn to a simple life among fig trees, windmills and the sea. Legend has it that musicians like Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd spent long spells on the island, and that spirit of freedom and creativity left its mark.
That legacy lives on today at the La Mola hippy market, in the island’s craftwork and in the laid-back style that colours everything here. Flower Power is simply the night Formentera celebrates it in style.
Tips to make the most of it
- Dress the part: flowers in your hair, fringes, psychedelic prints and round glasses. Island shops stock accessories in the days around the party.
- Check the exact date in the official festival programme — it usually falls in mid-July, but it moves each year.
- Arrive early: parking fills fast. Better by scooter or taxi, with a stroll around the village first.
- Bring some cash for the street stalls.
- Round off the night with a seaside dinner in Es Pujols.
Peace, love and a bed nearby
After a night of flowers, music and dancing, it is a joy to retreat to calm. Casa Trini is a rustic house sleeping 1 to 8, just 500 m from the sea and about a ten-minute drive from Es Pujols — the perfect base to live Flower Power and wake the next morning to the island’s usual peace.
